The strong performance saw the nation exceed its 26-medal haul at the 2010 edition in Guangzhou, mainland China. The top three finishers in 2014 were mainland China, South Korea and Japan in that order.
President Ma Yin-jeou described the team’s performance as outstanding during an official reception at the Presidential Office Oct. 26 in Taipei City. “Your hearts are as big as the world,” Ma said, urging the athletes to continue training hard and utilize their potential to find even bigger roles on the life stage.
On the final day of competition, Taiwan’s table tennis athletes were regular visitors to the podium.
In the men’s team events, Lin Wen-hsin and Liu Min-tang claimed silver in the TT4, with bronze going to Cheng Ming-chih and Lin Yen-hon in the TT5, Hou Ting-sung and Hu Ming-fu in the TT8, and Chu Jen-te, Lin Chun-ting and Lee Tao-Tang in the TT9-10. Lee Ya-chu, Lu Bi-chun and Wei Mei-hui also won bronze in the women’s team TT4-5.
The nation’s four golds came in athletics men’s 100 meters, powerlifting women’s 79 kilograms, swimming women’s 100 meters breaststroke and ten-pin bowling mixed doubles.
Taiwan’s 73 athletes contested athletics, badminton, judo, powerlifting, shooting, swimming, table tennis, ten-pin bowling, and wheelchair basketball, dance sport and tennis. (SSC-JSM)
